The journey of a new medicine. What is a good pharmacological target and how to find the right molecule?
Emilio Díez
Emilio graduated in Chemistry and obtained his PhD in Biochemistry from the Universidad Complutense of Madrid.
He spent two years as Research Associate in the Department of Medical Pathology at the University Hospital of Madrid before moving overseas.
In the US he initially worked in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Massachusetts Medical School on the role of G-protein couple receptors in the activation of intracellular signal transduction pathways. Then, he joined SmithKline Beecham in Philadelphia, where he spent several years studying intracellular phospholipases and their role in disease.
After returning to Spain he has held different research positions at GSK.
Until a few days ago, he was VP and Director of the Molecular Discovery Research Centre in Tres Cantos (Spain). The Centre, specialised in the discovery of pharmacologically active molecules, is a “state of the art” facility for "in vitro" pharmacological HTS studies.
He participated in the creation and development of the former Society for Biomolecular Screening (SBS), now Society for Laboratory Automation and Screening (SLAS). He served as Director on the SBS Board and is currently a member of the SLAS European Council. Emilio has authored over 40 publications in peer-reviewed journal, and is an inventor in a number of pharmaceutical patents.
