José M Mato appointed as a member of the new Society of CSIC Presidents
Prof. José M Mato, General Director of CIC bioGUNE and CIC biomaGUNE, has become part of the new Society of CSIC Presidents, an advisory body consisting of all former CSIC Presidents, which was established on 19 July with the aim of improving the national and international standing of this scientific organisation.
The Society of Presidents is intended to be "a discussion forum that will advise the current president regarding far-reaching topics related to both the institution's strategy and its scientific/technology policies". Another of the objectives set out in the Society's constitution, is to offer qualified advice in order to improve the working of the institution and promote the work that former presidents could undertake in their spheres of influence in order to achieve certain objectives. The Society will meet at least twice a year, and whenever convened by the current President of the CSIC.
The Society was presented at an event held on the CSIC's main campus in Madrid attended by the current President, Rafael Rodrigo, and former presidents such as Alejandro Nieto, José Elguero, Elías Fereres, César Nombela, Emilio Lora-Tamayo and José M Mato, president between 1992 and 1996.
In relation to his appointment as a member of the Society of CSIC Presidents, Prof. Mato notes "all presidents share the view that the CSIC is the most internationally recognised Spanish scientific institution, and we are all willing to help whoever is currently leading the organisation to ensure that this remains the case".
