BM1307 PROTEOSTASIS Meeting in collaboration with EMBO (18th to 22nd September 2015). COST Action promoted by Dr Rosa Barrio
About the meeting
The COST Action BM1307 PROTEOSTASIS coordinated by Dr. Rosa Barrio (leader researcher at CIC bioGUNE) organized its third meeting in parallel with the EMBO Conference on "Ubiquitin and ubiquitin-like modifiers: from molecular mechanisms to human diseases" (18th-22nd September, Cavtat, Croatia). The meeting gathered together the members of the PROTEOSTASIS networking (more than 200 research groups in 27 EU countries) and well known worldwide field scientists.
PROTEOSTASIS is financed by the European Union in the framework of the H2020 Programme and aims to integrate research on intracellular proteolysis pathways in health and disease. The Action started in April 2014 and will end in May 2018. This meeting consolidated the work carried out by the network in terms is scientific collaborations, exchanges of students, mobility and networking. Furthermore, it was a unique opportunity to set the basis for the future directions of the Action, especially in which considers the "proof of concept" of the translations projects promoted by PROTEOSTASIS.
The meeting included working group sessions, plenary lectures, poster sessions and social events.
Dr Rosa Barrio, Chair of the Action, outlines that "the Meeting was very positive, it gathered first line scientist in the field from all over the world, including a Nobel Prize winner. PROTEOSTASIS' members had the opportunity to present their work in this forum and to meet in parallel sessions".
About the project
The COST Action PROTEOSTASIS BM1307 is a European network with members from almost all countries in Europe. Its main objective is to facilitate research and collaborations in the fields of Ubiquitin/Proteasome, Ubiquitin-likes, autophagy and lysosomal systems in health and diseases.
Intracellular proteolysis is not only critical for cell homeostasis but also relevant for many pathologies, such as cancer, immune diseases, neurological disorders, etc... Its role in almost every biological process has generated a huge interest among scientists with quite different backgrounds, which in turn has resulted into both a tremendous advance of our knowledge and an important fragmentation of the field. The Action will coordinate and integrate the efforts made by European research teams to better understand protein homeostasis and to translate novel discoveries into products of clinical and/or economic value.

Dr Rosa Barrio, PI at CIC biOGUNE since 2004, is the Chair of the Action, CIC bioGUNE being the Grant Holder. She is in charge of the scientific and administrative management of the Action.
