CIC bioGUNE Bilbao | About us | Research in Biosciences

CIC bioGUNE, a member of the Basque Research and Technology Alliance (BRTA), is one of Spain’s leading research institutions, recognized globally for its contributions to Life Sciences. Located within the Science and Technology Park of Bizkaia in Derio, Bilbao, CIC bioGUNE operates in a space of 8,200 sq meters, where it conducts pioneering multidisciplinary research at the intersection of Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, and Biomedicine. Our mission is to advance Precision Medicine by exploring the molecular mechanisms of diseases. With an average annual budget of 23 million euros, CIC bioGUNE's research activities are structured around two core programs: "Molecular Recognition and Host-Pathogen Interactions" and "Metabolism and Cell Signaling in Disease". Our more than 200 scientists and technicians are organized into 19 research groups and 6 technology platforms focused on investigating scientific topics within these two core programs by developing more than 120 research projects annually. CIC bioGUNE’s research excellence is underscored by numerous prestigious awards, including nine European Research Council awards, three National Prizes for Science, and the Severo Ochoa Seal of Excellence issued by the Spanish Ministry of Science, as well as AECC (Spanish Association Against Cancer) recognition for cancer research. The Center has a strong commitment to disseminating foundational knowledge through high-impact publications, conference presentations, and outreach activities. It is recognized as a leading national and international non-profit research organization in life sciences (Nature Index). CIC bioGUNE also fosters applied research through collaborations with public and private entities to generate novel platform technologies, diagnostics and prognostic tools, and therapeutic advancements, evidenced by filing at least five new patents per year, complemented by licensing agreements, and eventually spin-off creation. CIC bioGUNE also places a strong emphasis on developing research talent and collaborates closely with Basque, Spanish, and International institutions to promote scientific and technological innovation. It also contributes to Medical Doctor education through partnership with the Medical School at the University of Deusto. The Center’s cutting-edge infrastructure positions it among Europe’s foremost research institutes. It is equipped with advanced technology platforms for genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, and an AAALAC certified facility for advanced animal studies with the maximum commitment for animal welfare. The recent installation of a 1 GHz Bruker Spectrometer has positioned the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) facility, which holds the seal of Unique Scientific and Technical Infrastructure (ICTS) by the Ministry of Science of Spain, at the forefront of NMR in Europe. These infrastructures, which strongly complement the highly talented scientific team, enable CIC bioGUNE to deliver impactful scientific advancements that benefit society, healthcare systems, the business sector, and the global research community.
