Experts from Spain and Japan join forces in La Rioja to unravel the language of carbohydrates

Researchers from CIC bioGUNE participated in the I Glycoforo La Rioja-Hokkaido-Euskadi, organized by the University of La Rioja.

The event, held on September 7th and 8th, brought together experts in chemical biomedicine from Spain and Japan to address the importance of carbohydrates in cellular communication and in the identification of targets for viruses.

CIC bioGUNE, member of BRTA, participated in the I Glycoforo La Rioja-Hokkaido-Euskadi, a highly relevant event organized by the University of La Rioja. This symposium, held on September 7th and 8th, brought together distinguished experts in chemical biomedicine from Spain and Japan with the slogan "Decoding the Language of Carbohydrates".

The first day of the congress took place in Logroño, specifically in the conference room of Bodegas Campo Viejo, and focused on addressing the most relevant aspects related to carbohydrates, their "code" and their implications in biomedicine. The next day, the event moved to the headquarters of the Language Institute in San Millán de la Cogolla, where the historical importance of La Rioja and its contribution to Spanish was highlighted.

The congress featured the participation of renowned globally recognized experts in the field of study, such as Professor Nishimura and Professor Hinou, from Hokkaido University, Dr. Francisco Corzana, Principal Investigator of the Glycopeptide4life group from the University of La Rioja and Jesús Jiménez-Barbero, scientific director of CIC bioGUNE and Professor Ikerbasque.

This symposium brought together leading scientists in the field of 'glycoscience' with the aim of establishing a forum for knowledge exchange, learning and collaboration on joint scientific projects. The main objective was to unravel the mysteries behind cellular communication and viral target identification, highlighting the critical importance of carbohydrates in this fundamental process.

The I Glycoforo La Rioja-Hokkaido-Euskadi marked a milestone in the exploration of the secrets of carbohydrates and further strengthened the scientific collaboration between Spain and Japan in this critical area.
